Hookworm disease is a nematode disease that is more common and seriously harmful to dogs. Hookworms parasitize in the small intestine, mainly in the duodenum. It happens all over the country. It is common in warm climates and is more common in summer, especially in small and humid dog kennels.

1. The causes of dog hookworm disease:

1. The common pathogens of dog hookworm disease are dog hookworm and narrow-headed hookworm.

2. The eggs of dog hookworms are excreted from the body with feces. Under suitable conditions, larvae (rodariae) hatch after 12-30 hours, and then degenerate into infectious larvae (sheeled filamentous larvae) after about 1 week.

3. Dogs are usually infected by oral infection, or they can also be infected through the skin and oral mucosa.

4. After the larvae enters the host orally, they stay in the intestines, remove the cyst sheaths, and gradually develop into adults.

5. When the larvae invade through the skin, they drill into the peripheral blood vessels, move to the alveoli and trachea, enter the mouth with the sputum, and then swallow it to the small intestine to develop into an adult.

6. Canine hookworms can also be infected through placenta and colostrum.

2. Clinical symptoms of canine hookworm disease

1. When severely infected, the mucous membrane is pale, thin, thick and dull, and easy to fall off;

2. Loss of appetite, heterophilia, vomiting, digestive disorders, diarrhea and constipation alternately;

3. The feces are bloody or black, and in severe cases, like asphalt, and with a rotten smell;

4. When larvae invade through the skin in large quantities, the skin becomes inflamed, itchy, and some limbs are swollen. ulceration, or erosion, etc.;

5. Puppies within the fetus or colostrum infected with hookworms within 3 weeks of age can cause severe anemia, resulting in coma and death;

III. Prevention and treatment measures for hookworms

1. Deworming: The commercial preparation is a 4.5% iodine nitrophenol solution, and the dose of one subcutaneous injection is 0.22 ml (10 mg) per kilogram of body weight, and the effect of deworming on various hookworms in dogs is close to 100%. In addition, levomidazole, melamine, and thipyrimidine can also be used to deworm. For example, the dosage method can be used to refer to ascariasis.

2. In severe anemia, symptomatic treatment is also required, oral or injection of iron-containing tonics or blood transfusions.

3. Sanitary disinfection: The kennel should be kept clean and dry, and the feces should be cleaned in time. Pour the wooden part of the cage with boiling water, and use a blowtorch to burn the iron part or the ground. The moving utensils can be moved outdoors and exposed to the sun to kill insect eggs.
